Year 6 - 1

Welcome to 6-1

Hi and welcome to 6-1.  I am delighted to welcome my new class to school and I look forward to many fun and exciting lessons this year.  After two disrupted years, fingers crossed for a year filled with glorious normality! smiley

The children will have PE on both Monday and Thursday each week so PE kits and trainers are needed on those days.  We still have fun fit Friday so a PE kit is required then also.

This term we will be studying the following:

English - Arguments and flashback writing.

Maths - Fractions, Decimals and Percentages, Ratio and Proportion and Algebra.

History - World War Two.

Science - Evolution and Inheritance.

RE - Vocation & Commitment and Advent.

PE - Hockey and Volleyball.

Art - Illusions.

Monday: Every Monday, we send home English homework.  Ordinarily, this will take the form of a reading comprehension.  This homework is due back in school on Wednesday mornings.  We will also be sending home spellings every week, the test will always be the following Monday.

Maths: Maths homework will be set every week linking to what children have been learning in class.  This may be paper-based homework but could also take the form of being set on My Maths.  Log ins will be in the children's reading records.

Grammar homework / Spellings / Reading

Children are expected to read every night where possible, with a minimum expectation of reading at least 4 nights.  Children are to read and comment in their reading diaries what they have read etc and then quiz in class when finish their books. If children want to read a book alongside their school reading book they can do so.  Reading diaries will be checked every week for gold stars.  There should be a minimum of 4 entries in the child's reading record, these records are checked in school every Tuesday.  Year 6 children will begin to access an online reading platform called Reading Plus.  The children are to log on to reading plus as this will help children with their reading and comprehension skills. Passwords are in children's reading diaries.

We are Readers

Well done to the children below who achieved their targets in Accelerated Reader and Reading Plus.

We are Writers

We were lucky to be joined in school by Honorary Colonel Doctor Andy Grant.  Andy told us all about his life growing up in Bootle before he joined The Royal Marines.  He also told us about the moment his life changed forever and how he refused to let one major incident define him.  Instead of crumbling under the weight of his life-changing injuries, he became an inspiration.  We decided that Andy would be the perfect person for us to write biographies about.

Have a read; we hope you enjoy them.

We have been linking our History topic of World War Two to our writing. Have a read at some of our information texts.

We are Historians

Have a read at a selection of our diary entries.  The children took part in a zoom call interview with Joan who was an evacuee in 1939.  During a writing lesson, the children put themselves in Joan's position and used their prior learning from History lessons and information from Goodnight Mr Tom to compile some fabulous diary entries.

We hope you enjoy them.

We are Gymnasts

Have a look at some of our photos and videos as we learn to develop out gymnastic skills.  We have covered rolls, balances and vaults whilst also beginning to sequence our work.
