Year 6 - 1

Welcome to 6-1

Important Information for Parents and Carers of children in year 6.

Céad míle fáilte Year 6! It’s lovely to have you all back and we can’t wait to get started with learning this year.  We have a fun year ahead of us with lots of opportunities to combine learning, new experiences and personal growth.  Let’s hope we can stay together and enjoy the year without any time out of school.

Mr S McCann

Here are some details you will need to know about this term:

PE Lessons

6-1  P.E lessons will be Tuesdays and Fridays this 1/2 term.

Every Monday, we send home English homework.  Ordinarily, this will take the form of a reading comprehension.  This homework is due back in school on Wednesday mornings.  We will also be sending home spellings every week, the test will always be the following Monday.

Maths: Maths homework will be set every week linking to what children have been learning in class.  This may be paper-based homework but could also take the form of being set on Freckle.  Log ins will be in the children's reading records.

Grammar homework / Spellings / Reading

Children are expected to read every night where possible, with a minimum expectation of reading at least 4 nights per week.  Children are to read and comment in their reading diaries what they have read etc and then quiz in class when they finish their books. If children want to read a book alongside their school reading book they can do so.  Reading diaries will be checked every week for gold stars.  There should be a minimum of 4 entries in the child's reading record, these records are checked in school every Tuesday.  Year 6 children will access an online reading platform called Reading Plus.  The children are to log on to reading plus as this will help children with their reading and comprehension skills. Passwords are in children's reading diaries.

We are Mathematicians

This term, we are learning all about place value and about the four different operations - Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division.

We are Writers

This term during English, we have been studying the genre of Biographies. We researched our very own Queen Elizabeth and completed some amazing pieces of writing!

We are Historians

This term, we are learning all about World War II.  We started the topic by looking at our own source - an old school log book, where it documented how WWII affected children in our school. As a class, we are reading Goodnight Mr Tom to help children understand life as an evacuee.

We are physically active

This term we are studying gymnastics and netball as part of our PE curriculum.  We have enjoyed learning about different balances in gymnastics and how to defend, catch and throw the ball in netball.

We are Diverse

During RSHE, we have read and explored the book 'Princess Boy'. Children discussed how the world is a diverse place and how we should not judge people by their actions. Children came up with questions to ask the author of 'Princess boy'.

We are computer scientists

We love to code in our class on code studio, we have been creating out own sprites!

We are spooky singers!
